Many of us have misconceptions about lean. At one time in my career, I was also a non-believer in the power of lean thinking.
Robert Lukaszonas, President LEAN Engineering

We often hear the following comments from our clients.

Lean will not work at our organization because:

  • We are not a manufacturing company, lean is only for manufacturing
  • Lean only works in high volume production, we are a custom low volume shop
  • We are unique and different
  • Lean is only for auto production companies like Toyota
  • We are a small shop and lean only works for larger companies
  • We tried it before and it did not work here
  • The lean tools do not apply to us
  • Our process can't be improved any more
  • Our people won't do lean
  • Lean is only for getting rid of people

Lean is nothing more than the identification and elimination of wasteful activities that exist within your business processes. Most of our processes are loaded with wasteful activities such as:

  • Motion (walking and searching for things)
  • Waiting (idle time)
  • Over Production and Over Ordering
  • Inventory and Supplies
  • Movement (moving of parts, supplies, paperwork, patients and customers)
  • Processing (redundant or unnecessary process steps)
  • Complexity

The benefits of waste elimination can be amazing.
